Have you heard of the newest electric kitchen composter on the market? The GEME?! The GEME is is the world’s first microbe-based electric home composter. The finished product is true microbial rich compost that makes it a strong contender for the best electric kitchen composter.

We all know that making your own compost is an essential process for reducing our carbon footprint and managing kitchen waste effectively. The issue is that a lot of us don’t have the space for traditional compost methods like backyard compost piles. That’s where electric kitchen composters play a vital role. They allow city dwellers and those of us in the suburbs without access to community compost systems to reduce our food waste in the home. The GEME microbe-based electric kitchen composter offers an innovative solution that harnesses the power of microorganisms to break down organic matter into nutrient-rich soil.

How is the GEME different from other electric compost systems?

The first electric composters on the market were countertop machines that dehydrate and grind up food waste. This type of electric composter does not technically make compost as a finished product. Instead, the food is ground up into a fine powder that makes it easy to throw in your yard or mix with soil. Two of the most popular electric composters on the market are the Lomi by Pela and the FoodCycler by Vitamix. I’ve personally used both brands and been happy with the results, but as previously stated, the finished product is ground up food waste that makes it easier to keep out of a landfill, the finished product is not compost. You can read my review on the Lomi composter here, my review on the Vitamix FoodCycler FC-50 here, and a comparison of the two here

See a comparison of all the electric kitchen composters on the market here.

The GEME is different because it is microbe based, continuously composts, and makes compost as a finished product.

I like to think of the GEME as another handy household appliance. You know, one that stays plugged in all the time. Similar to your oven.

To me, the Lomi and FoodCycler are more like a microwave. You don’t have to have it plugged in all the time. You can use it when you want. Just like a microwave can’t cook a full Thanksgiving meal, typical electric composters can’t make a true compost.

The coolest thing about the GEME composter is that you continuously add food to the compost system and empty it when it gets full (typically every 2 months for a household of 5). Once full, it is ready to use in your garden as true finished compost.

I’ll go into the pros and cons of both in a later post, but for now I want to focus on the GEME. You can learn more about different electric compost systems here.

How does the GEME composter work?

The GEME composter utilizes a unique combination of technology and natural power through its proprietary GEME-Kobold system. This system harnesses the power of specific microbes to accelerate the composting process and convert organic waste into nutrient-rich soil.

Here are the steps on how the GEME operates:

  1. Upon set up, add the GEME-Kobold microorganisms to the GEME. Let it sit for 6 hours before adding bio-waste.
  2. Add bio-waste to the GEME at any time (it can take 2 kg/ 4.4 pounds of food scraps a day)
  3. The unit uses a rotating mixing shaft to create a suitable environment for microbial decomposition by bringing microorganisms and air into full contact with the bio-waste.
  4. After 6-8 hours of operation the bio-waste is broken down into 95% clean air and 5% by-product. The air is filtered and discharged out the machine and the by-products continue to decompose in the GEME and regulate the next round of bio-waste.
  5. Once the GEME is full, you empty it and start again!

Let’s do a deep dive into how the GEME-Kobold works

GEME-Kobold is a specialized blend of microorganisms carefully selected for their ability to break down various types of organic matter efficiently. These microbes are specifically chosen for their composting capabilities, ensuring optimal decomposition and transformation of kitchen waste.

When organic waste, such as kitchen scraps, is added to the GEME composter, the GEME-Kobold microbes go to work. They break down the waste by secreting enzymes and other substances that facilitate decomposition. As the organic matter decomposes, the microbes consume the nutrients released during the process, effectively transforming the waste into nutrient-rich compost.

These microbes play a crucial role in the composting process by accelerating decomposition, reducing odors, and enhancing the overall efficiency of the composter. By harnessing the power of these beneficial microorganisms, the Geme composter ensures a faster and more effective conversion of kitchen waste into usable compost.

Stay tuned because I’m testing out the GEME finished compost now!

I was so eager to get this information on my blog that I haven’t had time to test the finished product yet. I currently have a few plants in tradition compost, GEME finished compost, and some compost from my other electric composters.

I’ll update the you on the results of this experiment on my social media channels. Once I have good data, I’ll update it here too!

Benefits of the GEME Composter

Efficient and Nutrient-Rich Compost Made from a Machine!

One of the key advantages of the GEME composter is its ability to break down a wide range of organic waste, including animal protein and compostable plastics. The combination of the composting process and the microorganisms in the composter generates a nutrient-rich soil amendment that is ideal for gardening and plant cultivation. The end result is a high-quality compost that can be used to enrich soil and promote healthy plant growth.

No Need for Filters!

The GEME doesn’t use filters which is a huge benefit over the other electric composters on the market. The Lomi and the FoodCycler have filters that must be changed regularly. This hidden cost can be a burden for many.

Reduce Your Carbon Footprint:

The GEME electric kitchen composter simplifies the composting process by efficiently breaking down kitchen scraps, such as banana peels, coffee grounds, and vegetable scraps. The composting process involves high temperatures, which accelerate decomposition and eliminate the need for traditional composting methods. By diverting organic waste from landfills, this composter helps reduce methane emissions, a significant contributor to global warming. It enables users to decrease their carbon footprint by transforming kitchen waste into valuable compost instead of contributing to greenhouse gas emissions.

Exceptional Performance and Minimal Effort:

The GEME microbe-based composter simplifies the composting process, even for individuals who may have had a hard time composting in the past. It effortlessly handles small amounts of food waste, breaking it down into smaller pieces that facilitate the decomposition process. The composter’s efficient operation minimizes the need for much work on the user’s part, making composting a hassle-free experience.

The bottom line: Geme is user friendly and creates a great end product

I’m not shy about admitting that a traditional compost heap will always be my preferred method of composting. However, not everyone has the space or ability to do this. My second choice would be to enlist in a community compost program. Once again, most municipalities do not have this option. If you don’t have space or a community compost program but still want to reduce your food waste, I think an electric composter is a great option.

The GEME composter offers a user-friendly experience, allowing individuals to take control of their own composting journey. By converting kitchen waste into compost within the confines of their home, users can reduce the amount of waste they contribute to municipal composting services. The composter’s compact design and easy-to-operate interface make it a convenient option for anyone living where space is often limited.
